You don't need a bible to find the source of this instinct. Science tells us that ALL living things have three innate drives of life:
1. to support life, i.e. to eat and sustain our/its life according to its nature;
2. to defend/protect life, i.e. use whatever mechanism that nature has provided that individual person/thing;
3. to reproduce life.

All living things includes an ant, a whale, a blade of grass or a person. Number 2 applies to your scenario.
