Not necessarily a hard fast rule tonyted. My local RC church has a large cross without the figurine, but with a shawl draped over it, placed on the wall behind the altar. This is to signify the resurrection. Ditto, some protestants wear a crucifix.
I would like to point out that protestants is not really in Britian its church of England and the high church is Anglican and all churches and cathedrals have crucfixes and some C/E church's are more catholic than the catholics if you know what Imean they have incense and some groups even the rosary, and places like All Saints Margaret Street London and Walsingham and many more are High Anglican, many C/E wear crucfixes,
