How can any religious belief system that preaches hell as an everlasting punishment be considered a religion of peace, love and forgiveness?

It is a false teaching.
Hell, or its Greek language Hades, is not a permanent place of torture,
It is simply mans's grave, and will no longer exist when death is done away with.
(Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.

(Revelation 20:14) And death and Ha′des were hurled into the lake of fire. This means the second death, the lake of fire.

The Second Death is simply total removal, never again to bother us.
And will some survive...?
Yes.
