This is without doubt the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard:

Is it for real? Are people who operate electrical switches on the Sabbath destined for hell?

Ooh Naomi, I'll be your faithful minion anytime if your High Priestess outfit is made of leather.

Ok so I get where the button pushing comes from.

But why do they have to carry it to such an extreme where they can't use lifts or switch on lights?

It's clearly a blindly unquestioning mindset that I will never comprehend.
Generally, what constitutes work, depends on which sect you belong to, One will drive to worshop, another will class even that as work, and walk, however this site gives a good explanation, under No4, Regulations. also, I can go very deep int this if you wish, from personel experience of it.

Well, Octavius, I'm astounded!! I really didn't expect to be promoted to such lofty heights - especially by you. What an honour! I'm amost speechless - but, as usual, not quite. Whilst it has been known, occasionally, for men to worship me, I have to admit that having led a fairly conservative life, I've never actually been high, so this really is a first.

Luna, thank you my faithful minion; the order is in for the requested outfit, and if you would kindly form an orderly queue to the right, I'll be with you as soon as I've decided what the sacred commandments of the Loony Cult will be. (PS. Any ideas?)

(Sorry to intrude with all this on your thread Llamatron, but as you can no doubt imagine, I am rather overwhelmed).
Lonnie, thanks for coming. Do you go to synagogue?
Hi naomi, not any more, I had a disagreement with the Rabbi and walked out, I was doing a project, (quite some years ago now), and wrote an article on the origins of God in the faith, I put that God was a result of Sunstroke and Hallucination, it went a lot deeper than that, but I then asked the Rabbi, who was quite a well known one in Jewish circles, what his idea of God was, and he told me, exactly what God was, I didn't think, anyone could possibly know. blind faith etc, so I told him he was a hypoctrite, and walked out.

A bit more than you asked, but better than just a No.
Lonnie, interesting. Did you never want to join another?
Hi naomi, no, not at all, mainly because of the God thing, I was never comfortable with it, for as long as I can remember, i'd worked out from an early age, you pray, sh-t happens,
A personel example, I had a brother, four years old, a happy, fun loving little boy, used to go into the Synagogue and sing Yeah Yeah yeah, (Beatles), evryone loved him, anyway, he managed to undo the catch to the front door, ran into the road, run over by a car driven by a learner, no-one with him, every bone in his body was broken.

I know there are other, worse stories than this, but as I said, this ones personel, an innocent, he never deserved that, and every time I went to worship, he was, and is, always on my mind.

Now, I will go into a place of worship, of any religion, out of respect eg, a friend getting married or buried, but I will not worship.

I'm sorry, thats a lot more than you asked for
Not at all Lonnie. I remember you telling that story before. So very sad. I was thinking today that so many people are praying for the little girl abducted in Portugal, but I don't know what good it does other than to perhaps make them feel better. I know men have free will, but little children are helpless against adults. Wouldn't you think a loving god would have at least made her abductor trip over a brick and break his leg or something, to prevent him from carrying out his intention and to keep her safe? This belief that people have in a loving god who personally cares for them makes no sense at all to me because he clearly doesn't.
