Perhaps you are right. Maybe a demonstration bomb in Tokyo bay would have done the trick. But it might have been a gamble on whether or not the Japanese would have heeded it. Then that would have been gambling with allied lives. Maybe the powers that be were not willing to take the gamble. But, I do take your point, that two cities might have been destroyed unnecessarily, if there was another way of letting Hirohito and his mob, know that this was truly the end for them.

Where do you stand on the rights and wrongs of Nagasaki?
JTP - Shocking to me, but I am not acquainted with the thinking in the Whitehouse at the time. Overkill perhaps, I really don't know, but the enemy was as cruel as one could imagine, and many POW's who came back said they never dropped enough bombs on Japan. The POW's were also entitled to an opinion, a more informed one than most of us. But you make an extremely valid point, that unfortunately I really cannot answer.
