Anyone else annoyed by the Pope's comments that Protestant Christian groups are defective and cannot be part of the "true church", ,that Protestants have value as Christian "Communities", but must not be regarded as churches?

Yes, I am Protestant (Lutheran), so perhaps a little sensitive, but this attitude is exactly what turns all people away from religon. I am not overly zealous in my faith, but nonetheless feel saddened by these comments. I thought Vatican II did away with a lot of this nonsense.

If you were the leader of a church considered by its members to be the 'one true faith' you'd be spinning the same old line. This is just the latest in a long line of affirmations by the present pope of traditional Catholic values.

However, on the other hand, and in all fairness and balance, many Protestant faiths (Baptists, Free Presbytarians etc) believe that Catholicism is Satanism, so fair's fair.
A bit obvious really, that the head catholic would think protestants are evil. I mean, that's his job, in a nutshell.

jenstar.. Never quite thought about it that way, though it makes some sense.

Whickerman..I guess some denominations might feel that way, but having spent 14 years in Lutheran Schools and teaching in one for 5, I never once got that message, nor have put it out there. Tolerence was always what I learned and TRY to practice.

Thanks for thoughtful answers.

Really delighted that that's the case. But there are those who believe it...

I think the present Pope is doing his best to roll back Vatican II. Bringing back the Latin mass is part of it. Watch out for the return of the Spanish Inquisition.

Whickerman-Just looked at the links. I can not believe that. Though some of the points are protestant (the non-biblical items, etc,) to refer to Mary as W*O*E, etc. is horrible. I never realised how vehement some of these groups are. Thanks for the info.

Spanish Inquisition........!?!

I didn't expect that ! :o)
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquistion!
Thanks, Corbyloom. Glad someone is awake this morning :o)

Is it any wonder that folks are moving away from 'the church' ? Here we have the head of a branch of the Christian church roundly dismissing another branch.........Same God, same prophets, same destination..............but different and inferior.........

Holy Gourd and Holy Sandal, anyone ?
the difference is that protestants don't take orders from the pope, which he may find annoying. They don't really take orders from anyone except God, though there's a huge heirarchy of archbishops, vicar's wives etc who try to give them pointers.

I cannot understand how anybody can follow any of this tosh, he was the same guy who signed the Bill protecting paedophile priests from the Police and Judicial system, this pope has alot of skeletons in his closet-research more about him!! It is not this that turns people from religion it is the fact that religion has turned its back on the true messages and is now getting its payback. The Vatican is sadly in my opinion the epitomy of evil. Jesus said when asked, that he did not have the rights to judge others only God did, so why does the pope pass judgement on everything!!! Why are there pagan Gods/esses that were worshipped well before Christ who strangely enough were born of Virgin Mothers, visited by three Magi who bore gifts etc etc etc etc oh and CRUCIFIED and RESURECTED! Mmm coincidence. Research Mithras, Diyonisis, Osiris, Isis, etc. The Nag Hammadi library is also available now in English-thats the Gospel of Jesus,Mary, Thomas, The Gospel of Truth, to name a few. They predate the Bibles New Testament. The Book of the Dead predates Jesus by approx 1000yrs yet it has a load of quotations that Jesus came out with!!! Sorry to burst the bubble on Christianity, but look deeper than what you are taught by some Church regardless of the denomination. The Jesus Mysteries is a good book to start with.
