firstly, let me say i think this is ridiculous overreaction to a simple situation. 100%.
BUT - let me play devil's advocate here. There are people on here every day calling for foreigners who don't respect our values to be sent back where they came from, or imprisoned or both. That's exactly what happened here, (although inadvertently) so is there a double standard in the mainstream press?

wickerman. I do appreciate your commend. However, this situation is a lot more serious than you appear to award to it. This is not a case of a few ill-informed people speaking their mind, this is officialdom deciding to that a woman who has gone out of her way to help their children was guilty of insulting their religion eventhough the children named the toy. There is no islamic law to say that thou shalt not name any teddybear Mohammad, it is their interpretation of the muslim law. The woman was oblivious to any offence that may possibly be caused - who would? Are the moslims not able to comprehend that not everyone in the world is familiar with their customs. Surely any religion that is supposed to benefit people has a degree of tolerance for the uninformed. Are we supporting the infestation in the western world of these barbaric fictional beliefs by staying silent?

Rampant Christian fundamentalists were put up with for many, many centuries. I don't see why their Muslim counterparts would be any easier to shift.
Once they get the upper hand, fundamentalists brutally supress any alternative thought at pain of death if necessary. It is awefully hard to change the regime once in place.
This is why it is so important to keep religion out of state affairs.

My questions:
Why isn't the bear allowed to be called Mohammed, considering that the children chose it and many children have the same name?
Is this exclusive, or is it condsidered ok for Christians to call their toys Jesus (also a popular name for boys in Hispanic countries)?
Why was the teacher there in the first place? I have always felt a bit uncomfortable about people going over to other countries with different cultures/religion in order to 'help'. Shouldn't the teacher have stayed in this country and actually helped more?

It's quite simple - Brits should stay at home. From now on, any Brit who goes out to gumbogumboland should know what they're in for. These people hate Europeans and don't give a toss if they're there to help their people or their children. My advice is: just don't go to these countries. You can't help them. They're savages. Gillian Gibbons is just lucky they didn't eat her.

I always thought that when we visit other countries, although protected to some extent by our consulate, we have a responsibility to abide by the laws of that country, whether oppressive or not and whether we agree with the regime or not.

Octavius, you are only supporting my main gripe and indeed, we generally do obey the laws of other countries we go to. The point is that there is no law in Sudan that prohibits the naming of a toy after their idolised deity. It was decided by the officials that a crime had been committed, obviously because of her origin.
We can do something by pressurising our politicians to stop the permeation of the harmful aspects of dogmatic religions into out society, just as we have done with FGM. The present absurd PC brigade makes conventional western customs take a backseat to generally foreign influences.

Panic, Jesus is also a prophet of Islam, so I suppose calling the bear Jesus would have offended them too.
These people have a totally different mindset, and logic doesn't seem to figure in their world at all. It seems to me that some of the Islamic nations are becoming more and more intent on causing conflict with the west at the slightest opportunity. I might be wrong, but I can't remember this sort of thing happening much in the past. It all seems to be occurring fairly recently. Although I strongly suspect that it's done for a purpose, I don't know what we can do about it or how we can combat it. Any ideas?
