These places were a metaphor for all kinds of naughtiness so they were targets for a good smiting by Himself with the big beard.

The inhabitants of Gorrah indulged in too much aldutery and lying.

Coming back to the volcano. A rift valley (associated with mountain building and therefore vulcanicity) runs N-S through the country. These places were near to it and very much at risk of destruction by "fire and brimstone".

A parallel exists with Gehenna, the Jewish Hell, which was a pool of
molten rock.

The rest is a tribute to the imagination of man.
