I know it's an old chestnut, but looking at the scale of suffering in Haiti today, what sort of God can allow such a thing to happen. Surely this must test the faith of the most hardened zealot. It's interesting that our so called "secular" society is always among the first to respond with spontaneous generosity. Do the other faith based countries (esp the oil-rich ones) display the same caring attitude to their fellow human beings?

Earthquakes and natural disasters have occurred all over the world whether people believe in God or not. Say for argument sake had there been not a single person who believed in God, would that have stopped it from happening?
they say earth quakes happen in countries that have sinned alot.....(dont beat me up over posting this, i just heard it)...didnt we have one a couple of years ago, it was just a small shake up, to remind us that allah/god etc etc is watching us.....;-), there is no such thing as an athiest, you are a believer, whether u like it or not, and one day this will come out, maybe on an atheists deathbed, im definately converting to a religion, just trying to work out which one....
I thought JNO's posts were excellent discussion pieces, I think AB needs the new sarcasm lexicon.

And supremely arrogant fanny, too, wiz.
Loss of human life is always sad but one must not forget inevitable.

For anyone who believes in hereafter as they are supposed to believe, these things should increase their faith and bring them back to the track. Because you spend so much time, energy, efforts to build your buildings, bank balances, you want to win lottery too. While doing all these things for material life, you did cheat with people, you might have told lies too and of course might have forgotten about your death altogether. And one day (without any warning or disease) you just did not wake up in the morning.

Obviously I have not seen anyone taking buildings, bank balances etc in the grave with him/her.

It’s like as you prepared for North Pole and you landed in Sahara Desert.
I think we should put John Sentamu and keyplus together. They might possibly understand each other.
Keyplus –

“[Being greedy and self centred] ...While doing all these things for material life, you did cheat with people, you might have told lies too and of course might have forgotten about your death altogether. And one day (without any warning or disease) you just did not wake up in the morning.”

So are you saying is that this is a punishment from God?

If that's what you're saying, then only the 'guilty' ones should have died, yes?

How do you explain the deaths of babies Keyplus? How exactly have babies 'told lies' or otherwise displeased God?

Surely it can not have escaped your attention Keyplus that the people who have died in this terrible catastrophe cannot all be bad? The hospital that collapsed into a gully taking with it patients, nurses and doctors alike.

Were they all bad Keyplus?

And if so, what criteria is Allah using to discriminate between the good and the bad?
I did not say that they were bad and I did not say they were good either. In fact I did not even talk about that scenario or aspect. I was just talking about uncertainty of this world and of this life.
Not to mention the uncertainty of the next. ;o)
