Where opposing beliefs are concerned, we are all atheists, so why are yours right and other people's wrong?

I don't have any religious beliefs. I tolerate most religions because many stand for good and have evolved to suit modern society but having blind faith in something that is so ridiculous is not a conviction I can personally align myself to. Religions are, after all, no different from cults, just bigger organisations.

I believe this because the evolution theory is supported by much tangibly factual evidence which makes a mockery of blurred divine teachings.

With much baloney about how each' god is the creator, that god must have been a distinctly disturbed one as it made a grave mistake creating Men.

If any of the supposedly omnipotent deities of any religion makes an actual appearance or performs a genuine 'wonder', I shall revise my beliefs.

you are indeed very right noth.
what is atheism without religion, huh?
err..atheism?

Noth, I strongly suspect that anyone who sees the exchanges here as simply an interesting read doesn't understand why the contributors continue to participate.
lol jomifl, but if there is no god and nobody claims there to be any god then there can be no god to not believe in.
Ankou, that sounds like jesuit 'logic' to me, Atheists have no belief that 'god' exists. there is no need for somebody to believe in one so that atheists have something not to believe in. If nobody believed in a god we would all be atheists.
zactly. then what would we talk about, eh ?
err... well there's always chatterbank
well we can certainly thank god for that.

Noth, gosh, I'm really surprised you need more than 4 seconds to understand why people here continue to argue against religion. Let me explain. Among many other things, when children are taught demonstrably false science, babies are born with HIV/Aids for no rational reason, and women remain outrageously oppressed, some of those who recognise and are appalled by the moral injustice speak out. Others either don't know, don't care, or claim for some unaccountable reason to 'respect' religion. :o/
That's pretty much what this question boils down to, isn't it Naomi? Beliefs have consequences, and from those consequences we gain clues to whether those beliefs are right or wrong. That some are content to make that determination somewhere over the rainbow, to relegate ultimate responsibility for seeing that justice is served to some imaginary Wizard of Oz portends grave consequences for us all.

Reality doesn't wait for us to question the validity of our beliefs and to draw the right conclusions. And if we don't like what we see happening the solution is not to cover our eyes, ears and remain silent. Ignorance is the playground on which evil thrives and those who think we take pleasure in pointing it out are mistaken. We simply refuse to let the consequences of faith based beliefs go on uncontested and for that reason and on that basis alone it is those of us who care about those consequences that are condemned, not just for caring but for refusing to support those beliefs that demand of us who refuse to hide from, ignore and deny their reality, that we be concerned.

It is so much easier to condemn humanity as inherently evil than to question ones beliefs and own up to their inevitable and unavoidable consequences.

Yes indeed.

Noth, I continue to participate for the reasons I've given. Actually repeatedly returning to a discussion between people who take an interest in the subject matter simply to highlight the futility of it seems rather ... futile .... but thanks for the psychological assessment - I'll bear it in mind.
In my Father's house there are many mansions.
It's not what you believe but that you believe which is important.(With the exception of satanists and Free Presbyterians, of course)
All varities of agnostics and atheists are on the primrose path to perdition.
Question Author
Huh! Just as I found a nice little group to lead me back to the paths of righteousness you tell me no Free Presbyterians! I give up! :o)
Sandy..I do find the churches continuing anti-primrose stance quite unacceptable. It is worse than racism. Primroses have no choice in the matter, no matter how hard they try they will always be primroses condemmed as such. The church is being blatantly speciesist and should be condemmed by all fair minded beings (primroses included)
