Are they going into your spam/junk folders, if so then just stop opening those folders, you should only need to check them if a mail you are expecting hasn't turned up. You can't really stop Spam these days as they just send to every possible email combination they can come up with, so even if you change your address chances are things will just be the same.
If you access your email account via BT's website then there's nothing else that you can do. If you access it via an email client (such as Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, etc) you can install the excellent Mailwasher:

They go straight to inbox it is very frustrating , feel as though I am being invaded, must have had at least a dozen today.

Straight through bt site
Use a client on your PC. It gives a second chance at spotting spam. Only use surfing to the site when there's no other option.
if they are going to your inbox open one and at the bottom is usually a link to unsubscribe. Use this function and some if them will stop

The ones I have opened do not have any Unsubscribe links , there is usually no wording on them except the title , they are strange.
Never ever ever ever unsubscribe from e-mail that you are not certain comes from a reputable company.
OG is right - an unsubscribe button is one scammers regularly use to catch you out.
