Can a club field 2 teams?

Recalling when Man utd did not enter the FA CUP and went on competition abroad.
Is it permtable given squad sizes for a team to play 2 games with 2 teams - in theory Man Utd could have done this ?
If they can't - what if Man Utd abroad game finishes - can they start playing a home game with the other squad? -or do they have abroad players return home before commencing another game?
