The long awaited start to the new F1 season arrived in Melbourne this morning and in my opinion it was hardly worth getting out of bed for.
The top team cars are so evenly matched that the race generally becomes one long procession. Very little overtaking and the only excitement is if there's a crash. There is now more excitement in the pit stops than on the race track.
On top of that we now have teams being allowed to instruct their drives to let their team mates pass them. The reason given was that the rule banning it was unenforceable, why? Last season Ferrari ordered Massa to let Alonso pass and they were fined. Oh I get it, Ferrari wanted the rule scrapping.
Subsequent races had better improve otherwise I wil stay in bed.
Yes it is boring, nothing more than glorified scalextric. I lost interest when the races could be won or lost depending on how long the car stood still, ie in the pits.
I am losing interest in it as well. Unfortunately boredom is inevitable as it has now become a contest between scientists, engineers and drivers(in that order).
Since the former are all working within the same laws of physics, aerodynamics, metallurgy etc and probably using the same design and analysis software all cars will end up with the same performance.
Yes. I've been an avid F1 fan for over 15 years but the last few seasons I've regularly missed watching races and am now more likely to just watch the 30 minute highlights on iPlayer...
Either the British or world touring car races are a much better spectacle, at least when they touch each other the cars dont fall apart with many a race finished with gaffer tape holding various bits of the car together.
It is also a lot cheaper to go and watch live and has lots of support races, I went to six meetings last year taking my two sons each time and the most I paid was £35 for the whole weekend at the Brands hatch Finale. Most tracks allow free entry to under 16's accompanied by an adult as they know it will get them back in the future.
