When did it become a necessity for participants in sporting events to sing the National Anthem? It is a relatively recent change - watch Olympic medal ceremonies from most of the 20th Century and you will see recipients standing in respectful silence (except perhaps for a whistling Daley Thompson in 1984).

In fact we (spectators) are still requested to stand for National Anthems, not to sing, just as British cinema-goers were expected to back in the 1940s, 50s & 60s.

Saw Andy Murray singing the national anthem up until "long may she reign over us" then he stopped - taking nothing away from Andy's fantastic win - the boy did well.

Blimey, what kind of 'patriot' requires anybody to actually sing the national anthem? What's wrong with respectful silence? They played it before the Prom last night, because a member of the Royal family was present, and nobody I heard sang the words. None of us had recently run 10,000 metres ! Everyone stood up, though. And I don't recall people in cinemas singing it (those that weren't making a run for the door that is; such patriotism in the old days!)

Do the winners from other nations sing their NA? I agree with an earlier post, it's only become an issue in the last couple of games. The South African one puzzled me, it seemed to be two different ones, it was certainly very long.

Seems to vary from team to team and individual to individual, whether the country's anthem is sung. The Dutch hockey team all sang theirs. Their may be a directive to them. It looks messy if some sing and some don't.

As a side note, Spain has no words to its anthem, apparently because, post-Franco, they wanted a new anthem but nobody could agree on words for any of the tunes suggested. A result is that dissenting minority groups sing their own words during the wordless playing, to the annoyance of the government, which is relieved that no such impertinence has occurred during the Games. Spain should have chosen 'Viva ,Espana!'; we all know the tune, the British could join in with the English words, and surely nobody could argue about the message.
