Okay, before I forget how it works ...

(coz I was trying to follow the argument in the pub)

England are winning by 11 points.

After 80 minutes and a few seconds, England are awarded a penalty.

Game over, and the referee blows for the end.

EXCEPT ... !!!

If England had been 2 points ahead, and Wales had been awarded the penalty, they could have taken it, because the team awarded the penalty is allowed to take it, even if the 80 minutes are otherwise up, and the ball is not dead until after the penalty is taken.

(that's the bit I'm not sure about)

So, the thing is, could England have taken the penalty if they wanted to???

Add into the mix the try on the corner post that was disallowed (wrongly IMO) and the points difference could have been even greater.

That's what I was trying to remember, divebuddy

So is the corner flag part of the line? If you touch a flag before you ground the ball, are you out of play?

The goal posts are part of the line, aren't they. And the padding on the posts is part of the posts. So if you touch the ball against the padding, it's a try, even though the ball is a few inches short of the actual line.

(thinks, thinks, I hope I've remembered this right)

A tennis court is bounded by the lines, too. So if a ball touches the line, it's out.

I agree re the disallowed try - when he touched the ball down, his feet were out of play, you could see that on the replay.

Is that a real thing?

Or is it like when someone teaches you a bit of a foreign language, and tells you it means "it is kind of you to invite me to your home" and it really means "would you allow me to touch your willy?"

JJ, I'm afraid that the lines on a tennis court are in play, unlike those on a rugby pitch, which is why there are so many referrals from Andy Murray et al !

LOL ...I mean when you say to someone, how do I thank your father for inviting me to his home, and the person says, aha yes, you must say ... and they stitch you up.

Anyway, I'm pleased that its a real issue.
