From what I`ve read both shooting and firing are regular terms used by arrowsmiths.

thank you for your answer but perhaps i didn't make myself clear.
"where's dad"? "he's out playing archery"
playing doesn't somehow seem quite right!
I "practice" archery?
I suspect that there's not a verb used as per your example.

The answer to 'Where's Dad?" would probably be "He's at archery practice" or '"He's at the archery competition"
The verb could be practising archery or you could say shooting arrows
Dad's out practicing his archery.
Shoot
"he's being toxophilitic" followed by "go look in the dictionary"

The Rules of Shooting are approved to give guidance to archers so they may practice their sport and engage in safe, fair competition with a spirit of friendly rivalry, all in keeping with the motto of "Union, Trueheart and Courtesie".

There's an archery club very near me and I have to say I'm not sure any of them would hit a beached blue whale from 12 yards.
Talbot.....hitting a four inch circle from 90 yards is not uncommon.
Sorry to hear that Talbot, maybe you just need a few more lessons.
