The Calcutta Rugby Club disbanded due to falling membership (after they had closed the free bar) - the club funds were withdrawn from the bank in silver rupees and melted down to make the Calcutta Cup.

The cup has been competed for by Scotland and The Other Lot ever since ...

Jourdain, my Mum was born in Glasgow 1915, went to school with Hughie Green in Mount Florida - anywhere near your Ma?

Oh, by he way, well done Scotland!! Yes, a game of two halves: the first belonged to the Scots......and so did the second!

Trying hard to think, goodgoalie. I've a vague memory of her mentioning Hughie Green, but I'd probably need hypnotism to remember her schooling! I do know that she was a rebel - which didn't go down too well in those days - and they decided that she must be ESN (au contraire, a highly intelligent lady) and so sent her to a special school. This did her rather well as , along with being taught how to knit (she could turn heels on socks, knit Aran sweaters, you name it) the staff soon realised that there had been an error and they all piled in academically to educate her. :)

She valued education highly and gave my sister and myself a very good start - we were both fluent readers when we began school and we both sat, and passed, the 11+ aged 9, without feeling the slightest pressure.

She passed her GCEs in Spanish & German when she was in her 60s.
A remarkable lady, to whom I am indebted forever. My mum.
