Bent Or Hopeless Referee?

In what proper game (with a decent referee) would Italy have ended the match with 11 players on the pitch ?

The cynical pull-down of Saka was a straight red in most peoples' eyes - he we was through on goal (even if a long way out) and at least one other white shirt was belting up in support on the left.

The studs-up tackle on Grealish was slightly more debatable (it may have been inadvertent) - but it was a potentially career-ending assault (and possibly fatherhood-opportunity-ending too) - and I've seen loads of those straight-redded too.

Then there was the 'play advantage' nonsense when England had a clear free-kick opportunity denied on the very edge of the box in extra-time - the illusory advantage lasted a microsecond before the ball was hoofed upfield.

There were others too - cynical fouling and faking of injuries were rife by the Italians and blandly ignored by the man in pink.

In the absence of any evidence, I'll just assume that the ref was an incompetent wimp ...

I agree entirely that England's poverty of ambition (after the early goal) was their downfall - they allowed Italy to play and suffered the inevitable consequence.

I'm not a 'one-eyed' England supporter either - I'd have been happy for Denmark to win the semi-final after the disgusting antics of the England 'fans' - it just grates that Italy won with such a poor show of sportsmanship and fair-play - but no change there then ...

Football (in which I lost all interest about three decades ago) seems to exist in a parallel universe. In no other business would the proprietor pay out about 90% or more of the company's income in wages. But more than that, no other sport seems so infested with cheats, as this thread seems to indicate.

Couldn't understand how Mount seemed guaranteed his place - didn't see him do anything of note all game last night. Grealish should have been playing: if nothing else, he would have drawn fouls, especially from the grizzled Chiellini, who annoyed me from the start when he was seen glad-handing the referee and officials in the tunnel.

Pretty unforgivable that Rashford put his penalty past the post when the keeper had gone the wrong way.

Roy - I winced when Southgate sent on the 'penalty experts' so late in the game - how could they be up-to-speed and used to the atmosphere in such a few moments?

Grealish was used too late too - why not in the 90 minutes?

I didn't watch the game but I do know quite a bit about what happened now.... ;-)

It got me thinking. I wonder if knowing who you're going to be playing against has a big effect on a team as they walk onto the pitch.

I'd feel differently knowing I was going to be playing against a team like England or Denmark rather than a team of thugs and cheats.

The referee may have been worried about the sniper who was taking out the Italians turning their attention to him.

The whole game is a farce.

VAR was only used to check very specific 'line' decisions and penalty offences - and to review red cards issued by the referee.

It wasn't used pro-actively to alert referees to foul play outside the penalty area - this is different from the Premier League where it's used in a much more interventionist way.

This picture does not show accurately what happened ...... the Italian player's foot actually hit the ball first then bounced off and caught the English player's leg.
