When I go to shutdown my laptop the sign that" updates are available", is there. I left it shuting down as usual and went to bed, then I was horrified to find it stll on full power and trying to configure the updates when I came down the next morning. Why is this happening. I shut it down earlier last night but after 3/4 of an hour it was still configuring. How do I stop this please? Thanks.

OK folks. Will do. Thanks.
The name 'Laptop' is somewhat mis-leading because it suggests that it is OK to use it whilst perched on one's lap. It's just as bad as using the item placed on a sofa and will cause overheating.

Message received and understood. It will now reside on the coffee table at night.
I actually wnt onto EBay and bought (for £10) a table which can slide under the chair, is height adjusable, has wheels and is therefore completely mobile etc. My laptop (or should it be tabletop?) resides there!
If your laptop is getting that hot then you have a problem with the internal fan and need to get yourself an external fan that connects into your usb port them dont cost a lot, as for the updates, you either let them update, or switch off your automatic updates or go to the microsoft website and download them 1 by 1 manually...the updates are taking longer this month, but if your laptop is taking that long to do them, then your laptop is at fault due to the heat, the heat is slowing it down.

That makes sense to me keleez. I'll make sure it's cool before I shut it down properly.

Right folks. Shut it down at 7.30 and it was perfectly cold. It has sat on a cool ventilated surface for the past two and a half hours and is Still updating and is perfectly cool.

Surely this can't be right!!

I'm on my late husband's laptop by the way.
chrissa....I have very limited knowledge on computers but have had a similar problem.

If you click into 'Control Panel' and then click 'Windows Updates' you will arrive at a page which, on the left hand side, lists 'View Update History'. Click this and see if you can establish the latest update which has failed to install. If by chance it is 'Error Code 643' I may know the way you can resolve matters.

Please respond further, because if I don't know the answer I feel sure someone will come to your aid; even it it means a further question being posted on the issue concerned.

Thanks for that Ron. Just as I read your post I looked over at my laptop and it has Just shut down. Hallelujah!!!!!! That was three and a half hours.

I'll check out my Control Panel tomorrow and get back on here. Cheers.
G'afternoon chrissa....I hope you haven't spent all morning trying to follow my instructions which I now realise may not work for you, because you operate on Windows7, whereas I am on Vista.

Perhaps the following may now be of some help.
