1) Open Windows Explorer (N.B. this isn't Internet Explorer)

2) Right-click on your C: drive and click Properties

3) Click the Disk cleanup button and follow the instructions, making sure to clean up system files too

I started to do this, after one procedure it asked if I wanted to get rid of Temporary files...what would happen to them
Question Author
Sorry ..I mean unnecessary files..what are these?
They'd be deleted.

Not sure what you mean by "unnecessary" files...
Question Author
it says at the top of the box which is doing the clean up "The Disc Cleanup utility is cleaning up unecessary files on your machine"

Then at the bottom:
Cleaning:Compress old files
So how much disk space has it recovered...?
Question Author
Not finished yet.
Question Author
Has freed up some...but not finished .
Takes so long.

My laptop is running very slow, freezes as well...in all driving me mad.Don`t use it every day..prefer the desktop.

If I take it back to "factory state",would that speed it up and fix the freezing and all it`s other "antics"?
It shouldn't be taking anything like as long as this...

Do you still have the operating system DVD and that of any other application(s) installed on the machine? If so, I'd seriously suggest you trash it and rebuild it...
Question Author
Trash and rebuild...that sounds drastic...especially to someone who does not have that kind of knowledge.which you obviously have,Would it not be better to just buy a new one..which I am reluctant to as this one cost me a grand 6 years back...Sony Vaio...quite a lot at that time.As I say,it has not been used excessively at all as I also have a Netbook.

...and the Desktop PC
Six years old is pretty old in IT terms, but that doesn't mean that it's obsolete. You might be able to take to an IT shop where they can reinstall a more modern operating system, upgrade the memory and hard disk etc.

That said, buying a new one mightn't be that much more expensive...
Back Off System restore to about 11-12% .. That will buy you a bit of room.
Use Find/Search Files & Folders to look for biggest stuff and get rid of a few. Make sure what you are deleting first!

I now have 14% C disk space ...not much..Have disfragmented, which did not do anything,it says it needs at least 15% to do so.
Have run Disk Cleanup...again!

Looked at the Options tag.

Windows Components :Can free up 76MB with Windows Digital Media Enhancements....what would happen if I do this?

Removing Installed Programs.....how do I know which...some of them I do not know what they are for.

System Restore:Remove all but the most recent point...what would happen there?

If I save Folders etc.to disk or pen drive, would this help?

Advice please...
