Hello all

I have several old IDE disks from past computers. I am thinking of getting some of these back working and am looking at the following device.

http://www.maplin.co....d-drive-housing-32139

This seems to have all I need including a power supply. My question relates to the description which says that software is included. Does anyone know what this software is or might be. I thought that these devices didn't need an extra software.

thanks

They don't need extra software, they often come with some sort of backup or sync software though (or occasionally encryption software)..... all of which is also sometimes only a trial version. but you don't need to install it to just use the drive.

I'd question how much use an old IDE drive is though, they tend to be rather small by todays standards and of limited use.

(that's also an expensive caddy)

Thanks for that

What price do you think is reasonable for a caddy?
You can get IDE only ones on ebay for under £10, although I'd be tempted to spend a few extra quid and get a combined IDE/SATA one, then it may be of more use in the future.
Something like this...

(note, I do not recommend this seller in any way)

Thanks again Chuck

I will consider your reply. I assume this is just the same thing without the box?

Yes it is...

I carry something similar to this in my kit, which is one of the most useful things I've bought...

though I seem to have picked an American one there.... no difference other than the plug, but if you were to get such a thing probably best to find one in the UK :)
This is the one I use: Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

As Chuck says, though, these might be of limited usage these days, especially when you can get something like so cheaply: http://www.maplin.co....-ii-hard-drives-36450
That's exactly the same as the one I have, although mine is branded startech.... probably made by the same people though.
