I've just been down South to visit my daughter. When I shut down my laptop there were never any updates to be done on shutdown.

I've just returned home and I see I have to update at shutdown again. Why is this happening? Thanks.

I had 3 in quick succession recently after a long gap - maybe a month or more

It may be that each one depends on the previous one having been successful
Maybe MS just decided to admit to a few bugs that needed fixing recently.

But.... it only did this when I was away from home. Is it anything to do with the fact that I was geographically in a different place?
MS is in the US. Can't see your move north or south over this side of The Pond making much difference.
The first obvious question would be... was your laptop connected to the internet "down south", if it wasn't it's just catching up

Other than that, it's not based on location, your computer will update based on the windows update settings and/or what you tell it to do.

Yes it was chuck, to my daughter's BT router. It just seems odd to me that it didn't want to update when I was there and now does. :/
I can go weeks without an update popping in (and I'm down South), then suddenly, it says I have five!

I always have nine every night.
