I wish to get a new e-mail address, as I plan to change internet service providers (see my recent question)

To avoid being tied to an ISP in future, I want one that doesn't rely on me remaining a customer.

Do I have any choice other than Hotmail and Gmail?

Am I being silly not wanting to go with the giants of Microsoft and Google?

Why not just register your own domain? If you go for anything ending in .uk, it will probably cost about £6 every two years.
i use hotmail and have never had a problem!

i think they are all equally mr. big!

Hotmail is Microsoft isn't it?
My spare mail account is with Yahoo.
Probably thousands of them.
Yahoo is an obvious one. I also have one I don't use a lot at fastmail.fm. Just do a web search and I'm sure you'll find loads.
Yes it is. Why would anyone want one of these "c/o" email addresses? It's akin to giving your postal address as "c/o The Chip Shop"...
You could take your pick from any of the following

I like the mail.com that Snags suggests - my preferred address is available.

If it is free, what do they hope to get out of me?
I've had a subsidiary of mail.com as an email address for the past few years, which is & has always been free - but has adverts on your inbox - as per AB. However, the mail server & service is excellent, if you don't want the adverts, then there is a premium mail box available for you for the cost of £3.99/month.

It's your choice.. ☺♥♥

Could I reprogramme Outlook Express / Windows mail to receive @mail.com stuff, without the adverts?
Mark, my postal address has been the chip shop for the past twenty years, but that's because I owned it.
''but has adverts on your inbox''

Not if you use an Adblocker...

Excellent, thanks Snags!
MarkRae, how do you go about registering your own domain?
My personal choice:

Chris
But it's still not "yours", Chris! It's still a third-party and, therefore, "second-class" email address...
That's a little snobby, MR

Although I hate seeing companies using @gmail addresses or the like (especially when it's on sign-written vans... if you're going to pay to get a van sign-written at least pay the few quid to get a domain) for the average home user having a generic email address with one of the normal providers is perfectly good enough and not second class at all.
