Can Open Office Org open Microsoft word documents?

If it can I cannot find out how. I get a list of programs to try and open it with but none of them work?

Yes it can, if you've got open office installed you should be able to right click on any word document and select open with > open office.org writer.

Or just run open office writer and goto file > open and select the word file,

I tried that, but I get a filter list of loads of programs, none of which work. Well, I tried all the likely ones.
Sounds like open office isn't installed properly then, try downloading it and installing it again.
Does the Word document have a .docx extension? If so, depending on how old your copy of OpenOffice is, you may need to download and install an additional converter...
