The battery in my Compaq Presario C60 laptop only lasts for 6 months before dying. Is this normal?

This is not normal. The evidence posted suggests that the laptop's charging circuit has been faulty from day one, or that you have been really unlucky with batteries.

6 months is really really impressive for a laptop battery! generally they only last about 2-3 hours.

No, I mean I have to buy a new battery unit as the present one no longer holds a charge.
Rechargeable batteries have very variable life-spans depending on how they are used/treated (even if they are genuine/reputable ones) but six months is very poor. Was the battery that's "dying" the original battery or was it a replacement? If the latter, are you sure that it was a good quality one and not a "cheapo", because poor quality replacements are false economy.

It was a replacement HP battery, not a cheapo, the second one I have bought since last November.
