I've just installed Malwarebytes and the computer is running very slowly

Under 'protection' should all 6 boxes be ticked? They are:
Enable filesystem protection
Enable malicious website blocking
Start protection module with Windows
Start file execution blocking when protection module starts
Start malicious website blocking when protection module starts
Show tooltip balloon when malicious website is blocked

So you've installed the pay for version then? (probably as a free, 1 month, trial)

If you wanted to install the free version (which runs nothing in the background) then uninstall it and then install it again and click decline when you're offered the trial of the pay for version.

Are you also run some existing anti virus/spyware software - if you have two running it can slow the computer down

It's paid for already. I'm really very close to taking this computer out into the garden and blattering it to bits with a hammer.

In this instance, factor, that's not a problem, malwarebytes isn't really anti virus, it can be installed alongside normal AV software.

Sandy, if your computer is old and was already low on resources then installing anything that runs in the background will slow it down more. if this is the case you may just have to accept it's time to either upgrade or replace your computer, or maybe just install the free version and run a scan every few weeks.

I assume he decided to plump for the full version rather than a free version of some modules.
There may be reasons other for it running slow- maybe you need to clear out a lot of stuff.

I can only imagine that you've never read any of the posts from Chuck, me et al advising people that there is no need whatsoever to pay for anti-malware software.

As has been advised, take it on the chin, uninstall it and put the waste of money down to experience...

throw the comp in the garden ? it is the owner of the comp that needs educating on how to look after them,comps rarely go wrong on their own even very old ones ,they need looking after like a car

Memory limits are notorious as a slow down of PCs.

Go to the Crucial website, you can run a check from there which will scan your PC and tell you what memory you have and what you could have (and can they sell you it). Might be worth checking.

Aside from that you can arduously check your drivers to see if they are up to date, maybe. Check you have the recommended size paging file perhaps.
