Upgraded from Virgin+ to Tivo, which involves a new 'router'. Since then the printer, which is located upstairs has 'lost' its wifi capability. We used to be able to print from the laptop downstairs without a problem. Surely the laptop doesn't 'send' its print request via the new router?? Thought it was straight from laptop to printer but if not what can we do pse?

It is possible that all goes through the router and it controls the network.
You would need to work your way though the printers settings and establish a connection with the router. Best of luck with it, I've not had a lot of success stumbling my way through such wireless connections.
If it is a wi fi printer then when you print from the laptop it goes through the router to the printer.

So you need to set up the printer to use the new router.
As VHG states, your laptop sends its signals to your router, which passes them onto the printer. In order for that to happen, BOTH devices need to be 'paired' with the router. So you'll need to get the printer to search for the router's SSID and then enter the Security Key. If you need help with doing that we'll need to know the make and model of the printer.
