My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.

Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)

(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

goodness, 2 inches of rain in an hour in Paris yesterday, and still not a drop on our garden. I have had to go out and trim the hedge - very hard work as it's quite thick yew. I was looking forward to the rain keeping me inside.
hot and dry here too. They are promising rain tomorrow but I don’t believe it
Been to mexico about my runny eye and nose and shebis completely flummoxed. She asked why was I there and I said to get itbsortd!! Am having allergy tests when back from UK.
Question Author
you certainly sound as though you've got a runny nose
Morning all. Just another day in paradise.
Hope all is OK with you all.
good morning all. We are forecast much rain here so I got up early to get the rubbish out and shower in case the dogs hated the rain as they sometimes do. This after a middle of the night (3am) powercut when I was woken by the complete silence! Dogs are fine so far so i think a snooze is on the cards
Woofy isn't it amazing his quiet and dark everything is when the leccy goes off, even though all is switched off.
Result the girl who bashed into my car has finally admitted fault and car can now be repaired under her insurance!!
oh that is good news! yes, its funny how an absence of noise can wake you. Dogs are very restless here so not much kip.

did you get your rain, woofgang? London seems to be surrounded by monsoons on the radar, all coming from your directon, but all we've actually had is a couple of light showers. Both times I had to come in from pruning the hedge and have a cold drink and this time I am staying indoors just in case, but it's really not happening so far.
Yes Jno, slow and steady, just what the garden needs and its very cooling.

intermittent drizzle here now. Still the most we've had for weeks, but that's not saying much.
Good evening from a dull and damp Derby. We've had rain all day from light to bouncing...the garden and the blackbirds appreciated it.
The Ozzies landed back home yesterday, their stay went very quickly.
Nothing else to report. I've been drifting round the online shops and leaving things in baskets. Hope you're all ok.

it's been raining hard for hours ... normally I would lodge a protest in the appropriate quarter, but at the moment the poor garden needs it so badly.
Morning all
We've now had two days of rain and it's quite enough for the time being.I know it's good for the growers and gardens but it's not good for arthritic flare ups accompanied by IBS flare ups. It's like buses ,two always arrive at the same time .Still,I live in hope that the rain will stop and have put the washer on.
Otherwise nothing doing here.Same old ,different day.
Hope you're all ok.
This 3am lark is getting boring. This morning it was torrential rain which finally finished about a quarter to five. torrential rain means the world is ending and much panicking must happen....mind you it was seriously torrential and they might have been right! Garden is lovely today though.

fine again so I have spent much of the day still hacking back the yew hedge. I am covered in scratches; I had to go to John Lewis and buy some gentlemen's after-shave soother, £20 the tiny bottle, but it does work on scratched arms. I remember it from last time I did the hedge.
Today I have made strawberry jam because I overbought on strawberries. I have just checked it though and its not setting. I might chuck a load of liqueur in it and call it strawberry icecream topping. I also had a coupon for a free movie from Sky so have got the live action version of Beauty and the Beast on the way, also I found the mincing attachment for my Kitchenaid for a tenner off on Amazon....generally a good day.
Jno I love the waitrose gardeners handcream and handwash
ps did you know that yew sap is an irritant?
Question Author
I certainly did. Quite poisonous in its own way. I'll look out for the Waitrose cream. I've tried aloe vera but it doesn't seem quite so effective.
