Can I install Linux alongside Windows. I have been told that this restricts Windows space.

Yes you can install Linux alongside Windows. You need to allocate some drive space for it (which obviously reduces the space available to Windows) but, with the size of hard drives these days, that's unlikely to be a problem for most people:
