I keep getting a message saying ''outdated version of Java detected , Update now!''
When it happens it takes over the entire screen and I have to turn off and reboot to get rid of it. Is this a scam or is there a problem with Java?

thank you going for a mess about inside my computer
You can live without Java for some time - until you hit a website that relies on it. It is a bit like Flash in that respect.
Dr. F - Does that ad appear when you're on any page online?
I'm going to do without it, if I eventually hit upon a website that needs it I'll have to decide how much I want to look at the site, or go downstairs and look at in on the iPad :)
methyl, i have java 7 update 60?
-- answer removed --
I have Java 60 too. i have just been on the Java site and I think I've found the problem- I also had an old version -Version20- that was still on there. I think the update notices must have related to that. I've now removed v20 so the hourly notices should stop now.
I agree with Ed though that this thread seems to be conflating two separate issues

#1 should be dealt with :)
I still feel that one can survive without Java. Nevertheless, for all folk who wish to retain it, I suggest that you check-out your comps for possible malicious malware..... I use the free edition of Malwarebytes which can be downloaded and a Threat Scan run from the following link :-

Hans.
i took java off 6 months ago not had a problem
I have also had this Java update thing come onto my screen, when I hovered my mouse over the link it came up with an unjavalike address, I'm glad I am not the only one!
Sorry Ed but I've just had #1 come up now (as it did last night, it was also doing it regularly a few weeks ago but had stopped). Nothing you can do but shut AB down - so not fixed yet
I think I've just been hit by one of the problems mentioned here.Just got this twice from AB.
I got a message (which didn't look genuine) which told me to update Java and before I could select anything/close it it took me out of AB to
http://www.updowntuv.com/GB/index.php?dv1=8413&dv2=&dv3=&dv4=&;sec_id=qWJ8vBQjIEzEzreSz9HKvnoSqleLI07jDAR0C9MRNAXdN2Cnv0iEfAsa7BMeh0Cnvk8d7AwdPBM0C0zQzB80vn739E7bzB8a&marketing_fid=MTQwMTk4MTM5Ny0wYzc5YTY4ZjUwZTljNDBkMDIzOTNjZDk0YzNhNTliOA==
I then got a message asking me to confirm I wanted to instal something called Payment Plan or something similar.
I logged out and back in and it jumped back to the same ad which took over my AB screen
