Four years life from a battery is not bad – but I would not have replaced it just because a piece of software said so. I would have checked how long the laptop operated from a fully charged battery – if long enough, I would have left well alone.

It could be a fault in the circuitry monitoring the battery’s ability to hold charge; test how long battery operation lasts.

Another possibility is that the battery contacts within the laptop have become tarnished (oxidised) and present too high a resistance in the battery path.
My technique to clean such contacts is to lick my finger and rub the contact until the moisture is gone.
You haven't actually said that it's a laptop you're talking about. It could be the button-cell that keeps the date etc alive that's failing.

Sorry; yes it's a laptop. Interesting that you mention the date and time because the date reverted to 2011 after the battery was replaced.
Please explain further where the button cell is and what nay need doing. TKS
It's the CMOS button battery you need to replace. We need to know the model as well as the make to tell you how to do it.

For optimal performance mat need to be replaced.

Replacement of he battery seems very complicated and as the laptop is failing - 2 u/s USB sockets and one with a loose grip and 2 keys intermittent, maybe it's time to bin this one.

I can ask a pal if he can help but maybe not worth pursuing?

Apparently that message refers to the main external battery that you have already replaced, not the CMOS battery. Sorry for misleading you
Replace the CMOS (Motherboard) battery, as the symptoms you've described is a nkown indicator of the battery beginning to fail, as here
