Putting Shortcuts On The Desktop In Windows 10

Since the official windows help doesn't help and other sites are no better, can anybody who has actually put a shortcut on their desktop in W10 tell me how they did it? much appreciation if you can...

for files and folders right-click on it and in the Send To submenu should be Desktop (create shortcut)

Thanks bibble, I actually want to put shortcuts to websites on my desktop and they are not as far as I can see in my files folder, though they must be somewhere if the computer has accessed them..
Depends which browser you are using, but in FF, Chrome, and IE, it's the same.
Go to site.
To the left of the address, is a little icon
just drag it to a clear area of the desktop, and it will create a shortcut.
Copy the URL of the site you want to shortcut to.

Right-click the Desktop, then "New > Shortcut".

Paste the address in the window that pops up, "Next", then name the shortcut as you want to & finish.
As a shortcut to a website will open a browser why not just put your regular ones on your favourites bar

To create a website shortcut get the url (copy the contents of the address bar) right-click on the Desktop and select New which brings up a submenu, the 2nd item of which is Shortcut so select that. In the new popup the first prompt is for the location so paste the url into that, click next and then provide whatever name you want, then click on finish.

So far unable to find a URL or a draggable icon as in explorer or firefox ..thanks

Right Clicking on the desktop just brings up 'select element', 'view source' or select all'..:-(

@the chair, I've used the methods you have described in W7 and vista but they just don't seem to be available in W10
Hi jomifl, thought you had made the depart this W10 stuff all sounds a bit of a drag. Think I'll stick to W7 which I haven't had for long anyway just since they gave up on XP. When they shaft 7 users, as they are sure to do, I've vowed it's Mac land for me.

jomifl - are you certain you are clicking on the desktop itself? For me, it's the same as on Windows 8.1 (and W7 from what I remember).
I am using W10 and have just dragged the AnswerBank icon from the address bar to the desktop and created a shortcut.
It sounds like you might be mixing up desktop - thats the first window after you login - if you are getting select element or view source you are on a browser page

Thanks for all your help, the problem appears to have been that my browser was microsoft 'edge' although I thought that I had changed my browser to FF, no problems with that so problem solved. Still no idea how to do it in Edge but I don't think I'll be using it.

Catch up Khandro, you are 2 generations behind.... Ironically after my hard drive failure I had to buy a re-installion disc for W7 but have now got W10 for nowt. Incidentally, W10 seems to be quite a bit quicker..
You can't do in Edge. What you can is 'pin to start' which means you will have a tile when you click on the Windows icon which is a short cut to that webpage.

Khandro, Best wishes to your friend. Many of us on AB have had similar diagnoses but we are still here, I sometimes think that fate takes a delight in mocking us humans.
jomifl; Thanks, I think you might be in the wrong thread, but I got the message anyway.
But on this topic, I have now switched to W10 and have installed Firefox too - which I'm pleased with, but I can't figure out how to copy my favourites from Google into it. I want to keep the two browsers.
I am using Chrome in W10. I clicked on the icon in the address bar and dragged it to the desktop. Let go and there is my shortcut to this page.
