sound gone in itunes.

I have a problem with itunes.

I was just listening to music and put itunes on pause while i went to make a cuppa, when i have come back and resumed play again the sond has gone!

the sound is there on my pc just not on itunes, foe example if i empty my recycle bin i get the noise there. but no sound on itunes. all i did was pause for a few minutes. any ideas what could be wrong?
