Automatic Updates

Windows XP - I have turned off Automatic Updates but everytime I switch the computer on I get the balloon message that my computer is at risk. Is there any way I can stop this message please? It's driving me mad!!

Why switch off automatic updates? With it switched off, you'll miss out on all the security patches and updates that Microsoft issue...

Because I want to choose the updates I install and not let Microsoft choose them for me.

I don't like them on either. I like to check the site when I want to, and install when I want to.

First, go into control panel and into the internet security stuff and disable monitoring of your firewall and antivirus etc. (same place as turning off automatic updates I think).

Then, in control panel go into the administrator folder and to the 'computer management' (I think, not on windows here..) icon, and there to the 'services' tab if it isn't there already. find the automatic updates service and/or the windows security service and right-click it and click properties to stop it and disable it. That'll stop it opening up.

Just also make sure you do have a firewall and antivirus running, and periodically goto www.windowsupdate.com and install the updates.

the last update i saw was for 'genuine notification'....could this be the reason he wants them off ?!

the easiest option to stop the annoying pop-up is to right click on the start button select properties, then the tasbar tab and then customise. Select the auto updates thingy from the list and change it's properties to always hide..

Genuine notification perhaps Mattk, but I choose not to use updates as I don't want IE7 which you will get if you leave auto updates on. I know there are ways round this before you tell me so but it's simply easier not to use the process at all. Nearly all the others are security issues anyway which most users won' be affected or bothered by!

IE7 can be removed in less than one minute.
