Javascript help please

I am having problems with my PC and I continually get a message saying Java script is not enabled. I then follow the instructions to enable this but when I get to the end of the instructions and try to click apply it is always blanked out. As nothing has improved is this the reason I am not having success, I havent a clue what Javascript is anyway. Sorry to be a thicko, but would appreciate some advice.

Java script can be enabled as follows:-

In internet Explore, click on TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>SECURITY>CUSTOM LEVEL then scroll down to "scripting of Java applets" and make sure that it is set to enabled. There is another item above it (active scripting) and you might as well enable this, also.
