Num lock can be turned on by the setting in your BIOS.

The BIOS is accessed when your computer is booting up and requires you to press a key like DEL or F2. Maybe different on your machine.

WARNING - making changes to the BIOS can cause problems to you machine or potentially damge it.
Even if your BIOS is old enough to have such an option (most modern ones don't), it won't affect the way VIsta behaves.

Do you have an intellipoint keyboard? If so, you could try the last suggestion on this page:

I thank you all but all the links refer to XP or before. None of them say they're applicable to Vista.
It's almost always bios setting

the only exception was windows ME.
the other "only" exception is a laptop

open the help and support centre
and search for help on
start with numlock on

if all else fails
go to the microsoft knowledgebase site and search
How to Set the NUM LOCK State at Logon Using a Logon Script

The registry is the same on Vista but I havent tested it as yet
I mean this particular registry entry is the same on Vista
Type this into notepad
set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WshShell.SendKeys "{NUMLOCK}"
Save it as numlock.vbs
Put it into your start up folder, so it is executed when windows starts.
It works.
