How is best to get detailed drawings onto computer to print out?

I have done many drawings (in particular designs for t shirts) but I am not sure the best way to transfer to them the computer so I can print them.

Would it be best to draw all of the images by hand and scan them.....which would lose some of the quality.

or

use a drawing package to draw them directly onto the computer. If the latter, which programs could be used (preferably open source), as the drawings are far too complicated to draw on the basic drawing packages.
