Is it possible to buy (and personally install) extra RAM , from 256Mb to 1Gb

Yes. Go to:
http://www.crucial.com/
and get them to scan your computer. They will tell you exactly what memory is right for your system.

(Assuming that the motherboard can take that much RAM, but the crucial scanner should tell you.)

if 256 was standard ... it could be that the mobo will only accept 768Mb
