Loss of Arrow

Why does my arrow, indicator, pointer, or whatever, suddenly disappear for no apparent reason and the computer 'freezes'. I can return to normal by performing the forbidden ritual of disconnecting the mains supply, which I have done for months without any noticeable damage.
