when i went to shut down my pc last night it would`nt shut down in the normal way.it started to then froze so i had to turn it off by the power button.when i turned it back on the check disc never found any errors but when i tried to shut down, again it would`nt do it so had to use the power button again.i know doing this over time can be harmful so any ideas what it might be please.by the way all my programmes are working ok,the only thing i did was run ccleaner so i don`t know if that removed anything it should`nt have.any ideas gratefully received many thanks
Are you running Win98? There used to be a bug in that, whereby during shutdown, the OS would broadcast a "shutting down" message, close the network connections, then sit a wait for a reply, which could never arrive.
I believe that there was registry hack to prevent this, and maybe CCleaner has removed the hack.
It was probably something you did. Did you download any updates either for windows or for antivirus, ad removal tools etc.
It could also be that when using cc cleaner you deleted an important file in error - this often happens if you are over zealous about deleing files that it finds. Always researcch the files it recommends deleting to avoid this.
If you go into event viewer you might get some indication of what the error was.
I have the same problem. I think it's because my C:\ drive is really full. I have learnt to a) ensure all programs have been closed some seconds and b) leave screen to go b/w between Start>Turn off computer and the next Turn off.
