power supply to PC
I know this may sound silly to some of you experts but here goe's we are having a disruption to electricity supply next week for about 8 hours, the last time this happened , after switching my PC back on when power was restored it had reverted back to new user and would not connect to internet etc ,had to send for engineer to come and restore, he said this sometimes happens,but can anyone tell me how i can prevent this happening again. Thank you

Zeb is right - one thing I'd add though is ... if you know when the disruptions are due .... unplug all your equipment - (you could also apply this precaution to TVs and the like) - include printers and router
most electrical equipment has a standby mode and in standby the equipment is still on (on the pc the mobo never looses power to allow for wake on lan (wol) and standby.
when the power grid is taken down ... the substation transformers "empty" and when re-powered can cause a momentery surge of many hundreds (sometimes thousands) of volts. Pysical switches normally aren't affected .... but electronic switches can easily be fried
