Anyone know why 2 machines 1 Laptop and 1 Desktop running on the same wireless internet connection would run at dramatically different speeds? Desktop running at 1mbps & Laptop at up to 54mbps? TIA
Because you're reading the speeds from windows somewhere; those aren't the actual speeds.
Wireless, .11g, runs at a max throughput of 54mbps. Why your other connection is 1mbps, I'm not sure. If wireless, perhaps because it's further away so the signal isn't too strong?
Run this test, from each computer (ideally while the other is turned off, and while having no other internet-accessing apps like MSN running):
I imagine that your desktop is telling you the speed of your Internet connection, whereas your laptop is definitely telling you the speed of your LAN. A typical LAN speed for your desktop would be 10Mbps, 100Mbps or 1Gbps depending on the combined capabilities of your network adaptor and router, and as fo3nix says, wireless 11g runs at a max of 54mbps.
