Can anybody tell me how I can recover some of my deleted files?

Can you do a system restore ? Not sure if it brings stuff back into your recycle bin though. Perhaps it doesn't.

There are a number of freeware programmes (also several paid for) which can recover deleted files after emtying the bin,but what you retrieve will very much depend on what hard drive activity there's been since the emptying.The less you've saved or altered the better the chance of recovery."freeundelete" is one a colleague has used with some success.Google file recovery,

Cheers ianmunt, I'll give it a go. If this doesn't work would I be better taking my laptop to the computer shop and get them to fix it for me, I really don't know what I'm doing?

I can`t give you the link but what you want is ParetoLogicRecovery. Go to Google and it should show it to you, but I expect one of our good AB`s will send you the link. IS THERE ANYBODY THERE?

I don't suppose that you have a back-up with the files you need.

Ideally, you should install file recovery software before your files go missing. The reason is that the installation process might over-write the data that you're trying to recover. However (unless you use the specialist techniques that the data recovery firms use, where they hook your drive up to another PC), you're going to have to risk installing some new software.
