Installing an External Hard Drive - Reprise
I said I'd report back on the outcome of this issue first posted here External Hard Drive Question
The upshot was that the LaCie drive was actually DOA when I first received it and would only make a clicking noise when powered up. I returned it to E-Buyer after getting all the opinions and doing all the investigating I could. They immediately agreed it was faulty and have sent me a new hard drive - this time a Western Digital model which I'd requested. It arrived today, I plugged it in and began to use it immediately.
Once again I offer my thanks to all the good folk who took the trouble to think about the issue and offer advice and opinions. Thank you all. (You know who you are!)
