virus ?

I have a problem with my laptop...when it finishes booting into windows xp home the display (screen) constantly switches on and off making it unusable..prior to this when looking at the windows xp home boot up splash screen parts of the letters are missing and the windows mouse pointer has bits missing too....when i boot into safe mode using F8 the display is fine and the laptop is normal therefore not a hardware problem with the screen. I have done an AVG sweep in safe mode and it found a trojan horse which i removed to the virus vault. however still has not fixed the problem !! PLEASE HELP !!! can anybody help me ?
