Keyboard Mouse not working

Hi, anyone any ideas?
Restarted PC after 2 week break, no mouse or keyboard working, tried via USB ports -nothing. Tried them on a friends PC -there working OK. Tried other hardware throu USB - nothing ! Any ideas before taking it to shop ?

Something a simple as this often works - unplug from the power supply at wall. Wait a couple of minutes and then plug-in, reboot, and often that removes the gremlins..

a longshot, but one to check before spending money.

When you first start the computer you should see a message that says something like "press f2 to enter setup" or maybe delete, hit the key it says at the time and it should take you into the BIOS of the computer, have a hunt round on the pages in there to see if the USB ports are disabled or switched off.

Don't see it so often these days but older computers often the default setting in the BIOS is for the USB to be off and as you say the computer hadn't been used for a couple of weeeks if the BIOS battery is starting to die it may have reset the BIOS to default..

Oh and the computer clock will be wrong too if that is the case.

Go to

Start/Control Panel/Mouse/Properties/Hardware.....tells you the state of the Mouse and can troubleshoot there.

You may find it a little tricky getting into control panel though if the keyboard and mouse are not working!

as would my suggestion be thinking about it :)

though it would be cheaper for you to buy a cheapo normal PS2 mouse and keyboard and troubleshoot the problem your self then it would be to put it into a shop for repair.

I have a computer with a USB "card" in one of the PCI slots.
As with any card, they can become dislodged & require reseating properly (graphics cards seem especially prone to this). If yours is like this, turn off @ socket (but leave plugged in so you can earth yourself on a screw to rid yourself of any static charge) & check security of cards by pressing on their edges. I think ChuckFickens could be more likely correct though. In the BIOS you should find an entry saying something like "legacy USB devices" which needs to be set to "enable", otherwise your mouse & keyboard won`t work .

Thanks everyone, the keyboard and mouse dont work via the USB or PS2 connection (or anything else) I will try Brooksys idea of opening up back and moving the cards, the BIOS idea is good, but without a keyboard !!!
