I'm looking for a netbook for my hubby, and have decided that the 10.2 inch screen will be the way to go.

Does anyone have any comments/views on this Samsung please?

it's a nice 'puter

It's not really a netbook, more a mini laptop, but personally thats the way I'd go, I'd rather have a slightly larger computer that has more functionality and usability.

it's a little pricey on the samsung site BTW

I'm interested in the Samsung because it appears to have a slightly larger keyboard than the one I was thinking of getting before Christmas.

Hubby has large hands and I wondered if a small keyboard would be a problem for him.

Chuck, do you happen to know if you can buy one that is pre-loaded with Word? Paul has done a lot of work already in Word - and he wants to transfer it to the little puter.

Hey, thanks Knobbs. We did speak about your little 'un, but on reflection I think a slightly bigger keyboard will be more suitable for Paul, as he has big hands, and he will need to do a lot of typing on it for his course work (he's a student - a student at 50!)

Hey Knobbs, I don't suppose yours came pre-loaded with Word did it? I don't know if you can get one that is, but that would be a big help, as Paul has done a lot of course work already in Word.

I'd totally agree with you Chappie that for everyday use most people would get on better with the slightly larger screen and keyboard (though it's nice that Knobby is happy with his little one... Bless him :))

I doubt you will find one with Office preloaded, and if you do you will have to pay the going price extra for office. which is fairly expensive..... so that leaves you with two choices.

Either...

Install office on it your self, if you already have a copy of office you are allowed to install it on two computers for your own use (as long as at least one of them is a portable computer)

Or download and install open office, which is a free alternative to micorsoft office, the open office version of word is as good as the MS version and will let him open, edit and save all his existing documents.

Word is part of Office - a hugely expensive piece of software that would vastly increase the price of the netbook, so it is never included.

Your husband can buy the student version of Office but if his work is always printed off and not emailed or sent in on cd or similar, the free OpenOffice is compatible with Word

Hey, thanks Chuck. The Open Office sounds great. Do you think it will have exactly the same facilities on it as MS Word? Paul has footers in most of his documents (and we have been having problems with them, but his course tutor wants them on the documents). Do you think Open Office will have the "footers" facility?

Hey Knobbs, there was very little in it, but we looked at two computers, side by side, and the 8.9 inch screen's keyboard was slightly (not by much) smaller than the 10.2 inch screen. Only very slightly though.

You sound like you use yours mostly for pleasure? Paul will be using his to type up reports while he is at college and to be honest I still wonder if he'll be able to adapt to a little one.

Open Office support headers and footers for sure... and I'd be fairly sure they would be compatible with the microsoft word headers and footers.

I can't check that for sure now though as I'm at home so I'm fully on linux... no windows here.

If nobody has answered with a definitive yay or nay by tomorrow when I'm at work I'll double check that it does work for sure.

Hey Knobbs, I was also wondering about loading stuff onto it, as it doesn't have the necessary slots.

Paul tells me there's a way round this, but it's all too complicated for me. Firing it up with the start button is about the level of my capability.

For knobby and Chappie (if you do get a netbook)

Once you have it setup and working on your network at home (wireless or wired) then goto another computer that has a CD drive, open "my computer" and right click on the CD drive select sharing and security, share the CD drive... then by looking through network neighborhood you should be able to see. and use, the other computers CD drive for installing software.

(it's can be a tiny bit more complicated than that ^... but if it's important that can be covered)

Hey, thanks everso Chuck. That sounds complicated but I think Paul will be able to do it. Hopefully the Open Office will be able to sort him out, with a bit of luck.

Paul already has a little stick he puts into the computer to transfer his work from one computer to the other. All very clever stuff.
