I need a Laptop which is light and easy to carry around.
Netbooks are no good as they need a separate external disc drive. A12 inch LT might be the answer but they appear to be dearer than the 15 inch ones for the same spec. Any suggestions please ?

Didn't know that Netbooks needed an external disc drive.
Netbooks come with hard drives. They don't have cd or dvd drives. This one has a 160GB hard drive:

Yes they do because they are too small to accommodate the drive mechanism. As a result you have to download all the software and of course all the discs you have can't be used except by using an external drive.

Thanks for the suggestion hc. I had looked at several Netbooks but I wanted to install Norton and MS Office but that has too be done on-line and doing anything on-line , especially Norton can be a right pain. The PC World engineers admitted that was the main problem with Netbooks and try to sell their package which includes installation, but even if that was acceptable it still means all my other discs can't be easily used.

Yes I think that might be the answer. Thanks hc !
There are a few ways to get round the lack of CD drive.

1) assuming you have another computer and they will both share an internet connection then they are already networked together, share the CD drive on your other computer and mount it as a network drive on the netbook.

2) get a USB memory stick, copy the contents of any CD you want to install onto the stick and install from that.

3) for the occasional bit of software that really insists on being installed from a CD, create an image of the CD (an ISO) and use something like daemon tools to mount the image as a virtual CD drive

The only time that not having a CD drive really becomes in issue is if you want to reinstall windows, but that can be overcome too.
