virus scan

hi all
i have avg 8.5 free version and at the moment i manually scan for viruses either every day or every other day after updating the data base. if i choose to set the updates and scan to auto at a certain time could i leave my computer in stand by mode and when its time for the update/scan the computer will start or do i have to leave my computer switched on

leave on - better to set it when you know you'll be elsewhere - having tea or watching the news

thanks for the reply, thats what i was thinking of doing but thought i would try and do my bit for the enviroment by leaving it on stand by
