There are plenty of places to download LEGAL MP3 music (not all mp3 downloads are illegal).

Any unsigned band, singer etc can make their music available as mp3 for download and it is not illegal.

Found this with a list of legal sites (not sure if it is up to date)

Well there is warez sites, torrents, other P2P systems - all these allow you to download music for free. I'm just not so sure about the hassle-free part
